Woodgrove Centre is Vancouver Island’s largest shopping centre. Located in the harbour city of Nanaimo, BC, the mall features over 724,000 square feet of retail space and over 140 stores and services. It draws close to 6 million visitors annually. The complex, originally built in 1981, underwent a major renovation to the centre’s common areas, food court, entrances, and exterior.
Houle was contracted with the electrical construction and networks and infrastructure systems for the mall. Work included major removal and replacement of lighting, installation of new floor boxes for power and data throughout the mall, and addition of exterior canopies. Houle successfully utilized lean construction (Kanban) to manage inventory during the project. Inventory was set-up in large mobile job boxes that was easily transported to different areas of the mall.
Since the mall remained operational throughout renovation, careful coordination with tenants and stakeholders were fundamental. The team at Houle had to be flexible when performing its tasks, working around demolition work, newly tiled areas, and kiosks to avoid disruption.
Due to Houle’s commitment to work night shifts for one year, the project was completed under-hours. Houle developed good relations with the general contractor and the owner.
