Located in the Comox Valley area, the Buckley Bay Substation was built to help offset the heavy electricity loads on the other substations in Courtenay, Comox, and Qualicum Beach. This additional substation meant customers between Courtenay/ Comox and Qualicum Beach, and on Denman and Hornby Islands is now served by four substations.
The project consisted of the construction of an open-air substation next to existing transmission lines in addition to underground distribution circuits connecting the substation to the existing above-ground distribution lines along Highway 19A. Houle performed all civil, electrical, and P&C installation for the new 138kV – 25kV substation.
The ever-changing winter weather conditions presented a challenge to the Houle team. Ensuring good communication within the team and with other trades ensured the weather did not affect the project schedule any more than necessary.
