Project info
The North Island College (NIC) undertook a significant project to develop student housing on its Comox Valley campus. Aimed at enhancing the student experience and meeting the growing demand for on-campus accommodation, the new housing facility provided modern, affordable living spaces for students, with a mix of single-occupancy rooms and shared living spaces. Completed in 2025, the campus now features two four-storey mass timber buildings, delivering 217 beds of affordable student housing, along with a variety of community amenity spaces on campus.
Designed with Indigenous elements and sustainability in mind, the building featured energy-efficient systems, green spaces, and was constructed without the use of materials that contain chemicals harmful to humans or the environment — all contributing to a healthy, community-focused environment.
Houle was proud to serve as a Design-Build partner on this project, enabling early collaboration during the design phase. During construction, our scope included several critical systems: electrical distribution, data networks, security and access control, CCTV systems, fire alarms, and a photovoltaic (PV) system — all seamlessly integrated into the existing campus infrastructure.
