Scope of Work

Completed: 2013

Owner: University of Victoria

Founded in 1903, the University of Victoria (UVic) is British Columbia’s second largest research university. With annual enrollment at around 20,000 students, UVic’s campus is known for its innovation architecture, beautiful gardens, and mild climate.

As the Prime Contractor, Houle used local subcontractor trades to pour a footing for a new 5000kVA transformer and new concrete stairs, and for modifications to the existing fencing. Houle completed the placement of the transformer, supplied and installed the new primary switchgear line-up, and made modifications to the existing T2 secondary switching line-up. Additionally, there was a requirement to install approximately 16 kms of new high voltage cable with spliced connections in five separate manholes. Energizing the new components of the project required a simultaneous co-ordinated work plan with another contractor working on the UVic Campus and with BC Hydro.

All scheduling, established by Houle in conjunction with input from UVic, was subject to the limitations of a 24 hour shut down window.

The project completed on time and was under budget.
