Fraser Surrey Docks is the largest modern, multi-purpose marine terminal on the West Coast of North America. It serves the needs of container, breakbulk, project cargo, forest products, and bulk customers in the Port Metro Vancouver and around the world.
Houle supplied and installed new security, communication, and roadway electrical infrastructure at Zone 8 at Fraser Surrey Docks (FSD) along Robson Road. Houle installed electrical, fibre optic, networking, electrical luminaries (street lighting), and traffic lights and signals. Houle also coordinated the paving, concrete work, and civil work. Additional work included the installation of underground conduits with wooden and steel poles complete with concrete bases.
To control traffic entering Fraser Surrey Docks and increase its security measures on the dock, security work consisted of installing security gates, operator control booths, card readers, PLCs, in ground loops, CCTV, and video analytics. The systems are connected to the Port Metro Vancouver network infrastructure by cellular links, giving the Port of Metro Vancouver the ability to monitor Fraser Surrey Docks’ traffic.
Challenges
To keep the port operational and minimize disruptions to the port’s operations, Houle had to work around the port’s schedule. This meant working at night and on the weekends. Houle also needed to coordinate truck lane closures in order to perform the necessary roadwork paving. Careful safety measures were required throughout the project as working around the trucks presented safety risks.
Successes
The project was completed on-time and on-budget.
