Scope of Work

Completed: 2008

Owner: Vancouver Public Library

  • LEED Gold

Spanning 36,000 square feet over three floors, the City of North Vancouver’s Public Library is a proud landmark for the city. The facility boasts double the capacity of the previous library, with three levels of collections/ administration and two levels of underground parking. Amenities in this state-of-the-art building include a large network of public computers, wireless internet access, a study hall, community meeting rooms, a children’s reading garden, cafe’s, public art, and ample parking.

Houle was responsible for the complete wiring needs of this building, including electrical distribution; comprehensive data network system to serve one main communications room, three communications closets, and a large network of public computers; full security systems including interior/exterior IP cameras and door/card access; fire alarm system; and lighting.

Several late additions to the project provided challenges to Houle since many additions required wiring through cast-in-place structures. Houle had to prewire through extensive exposed concrete designs. Due to the small size of the electrical room, Houle needed to come up with innovative solutions to “hang” the electrical equipment. The “layered” ceiling design also posed a challenge during lighting installation.

Houle provided approximately 10% savings on lighting through value engineering.
