The BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre is the only facility in Western Canada dedicated to the health of women, newborns, and families. Adjacent to this hospital is the BC Children’s Hospital which specializes in healthcare for patients from birth to age 17. Previously the two hospitals were officially a single organization and were known as the Children’s and Women’s Health Centre of British Columbia.

Houle was contracted by the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) to build a new, state-of-the-art data centre. The data centre needed to handle the hospital’s intensive data processing on the front-end and enormous storage at the back-end, including serving administrative requirements such as patient records and scheduling. The data centre also needed to serve other organizations connected with the PHSA network, including the BC Cancer Agency and the Centre for Disease Control.

Houle installed several technology and power components for this impressive data centre. Houle installed all the racks and cabinets that housed the IT critical servers and installed all the cable trays required for the extensive data cabling that was to be installed. Unique to this room was the use of Cat6 angled patch panels. This 10 gigabit modular system was the first of its kind to be used in western Canada. Houle completed 30,000 feet of data wiring and 672 terminations. Houle also completed installation of server cabinets and power to all electrical systems – in less than half the time that would normally be allotted for such a project.

Houle brought power from the hospital’s central distribution centre and installed the data centre’s main electrical panel. Power was also brought to the room’s fire alarm system, which detects both smoke and heat. Houle also brought power to two specialized air conditioning units and then ran cabling up five-stories to the hospital’s roof where the condensers were located. Additionally, Houle installed the server room’s two 80kVA UPS systems.

The extremely sensitive nature of the hospital environment and the limited space in the 800 square foot room brought challenges to the team at Houle. The team was further challenged with completing the project under extremely tight deadlines.

Houle completed the data, communications, and power requirements with a single team of professionals, saving the client both time and money.
