Houle removed and replaced three end-of-life 750kW Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) located at 4000 Seymour Place in Victoria, BC. This was replaced with three new 600kW UPS units complete with synchronizing and paralleling equipment. Significant operational cost savings were achieved as a result of the upgrade. The new units operates more efficiently, quieter, and with a reduced footprint.

Houle also replaced the former cooling system with a much smaller system, along with its associated ductwork. This eliminated all former air circulation problems. A Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system was added to monitor all key distribution equipment in the main electrical substation. Also added was a hydrogen gas detection system, new UPS output and paralleling distribution, and flooded cell batteries equipped with monitoring to provide early indication of potential problems. All systems are networked to the Building Engineers’ station.

Houle coordinated the mechanical, civil, and general contracting sub-trades. This involved site and safety orientation of all trades, site access management, and scheduling.

The Data Centre could not tolerate any interruption from its power supply without a costly loss to its servers. Even a single mistake during this project could dump connected critical loads that would negatively affect project completion date. Concise coordination between Houle and the project manager, the user groups, the UPS supplier, and the Engineer of Record was required to piece together all of the components to complete the project error free.

The project was completed under budget and was well ahead of schedule. There was no downtime which was critical for this site. There were no injuries or incidents during the entire installation which took several months to complete. The results of the project has been significant gains in performance, reliability, and operational integrity for the power that supplies critical loads in 4000 Seymour.
